It all started when…
The Rio Grande Southern Railroad had to economize during the 1930's depression. The railroad built 7 "motors" to fulfill the same function as the steam train without the large crew. The motors were well suited to hauling the mail, a few passengers and a small amount of freight to the scattered rural communities it served in southwestern Colorado.
The video is very well done and aired on PBS on December 7, 2017. It is about 26 minutes long and worth every minute! Click here to link to the video.
